DO YOU KNOW WHAT DAMAGE SUN AND HEAT CAN DO TO THE HEALTH OF YOUR EYES?

Experts, at this time of rising sun and heat, tend to reinforce alerts for skin care and hydration. However, excessive exposure to sun and heat, as well as staying in crowded spaces can also have a negative impact on eye health.

During warm seasons the most common eye diseases are those that are most easily transmitted due to heat and crowding of people in spaces. All because, hot air can favor the proliferation of viruses and bacteria.

Heat also has another characteristic, it makes people want to refresh themselves. Most of the time, the solution goes through the pool or the sea. Although there is no greater pleasure during the summer than diving, contact with contaminated water, in swimming pools and/or on beaches facilitates the transmission of these bacteria and viruses. The most common eye conditions are conjunctivitis, which can be viral, bacterial or allergic. The main symptoms are: the sensation of sand in the eyes, secretion, recurrent tearing, redness and itching.

The main care is to minimize the probability of transmission and contact with allergens. In other words, to accomplish something that is so widespread in our pandemic days, to avoid taking your hands to your eyes, scratching them or sharing towels. If you wear contact lenses, you should take some extra care to avoid contagion. Do not use a protector near the eyes, avoid staying for too long in chlorinated pools, among others. Contagion occurs mainly from person to person or through material that can house bacteria (for example: sponges).

If you experience any of the symptoms described above, seek medical advice quickly and avoid self-medication. The greatest and most serious risk for those who do not seek appropriate treatment is the appearance of corneal ulcers. But we also have to take into account the worsening and possible transmission.

Because at this point the density and intensity of UV rays also increase, the macula lutea can suffer damage and leave the eyes but susceptible to inflammation, which again reveals the importance of using sunglasses with UV filters.
